"A five piece from Cork who take the anguish, angst and pain out of rock 'n' roll opting instead to just be really good. Beautiful, smart, and wealthier than most regular folk, FRED are the people's band, making music for the people, by the super-people. Imagine getting a face massage, that's what FRED's music does, it massages your face but nothing else, for its selective in its technique. It also takes you to the cinema and buys you Coke and a bag of minstrels" Says the band...

"We are delighted to support this new festival. The Irish Performing Arts Festival will create many new opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities all over the country. We hope that this event will be a great success and continue into the future....good luck to everyone involved"
www.frankandwalters.net
COPE Foundation founded and hosted the first ever Irish Performing Arts Festival in Cork on June 16th, 17th and 18th 2009. The festival provided new opportunities for persons with an intellectual disability to display their artistic talents at a national level. The event was supported in part with funds and sponsorship from the Cork County / City Council, Electro Technical Services and Lyric FM.  It is estimated that 400 performers representing the four provinces of Ireland took part in the festival.  These performers were supported by up to 400 staff, volunteers, family and friends bringing approximately 800 people into Cork over the three days.

Over the three days performers showcased their talents in well known Cork theatres including:
  • Song Category: Cork City Hall
  • Dance Category: Cork School of Music
  • Instrumental Category: Cork School of Music
  • Drama Category: The Firkin Crane
  • Street Performances: The Grand Parade.

A small team of people in COPE Foundation began work on the project in November 2007, and as the festival gained traction a steering committee was formed to ensure its success.

Free workshops and training were provided by COPE Foundation and the Soundbeam project to organisations nationally in the use of Soundbeam which many of our own staff also participated in.

Fundraising efforts included, a golf classic, grant applications, table quiz, hill walk and cycle, a draw,  voluntary contributions from City and County Councillors and a fundraising concert.  All of these fundraisers were vital to the success of this festival.

COPE Foundation are delighted to report that it’s Irish Performing Arts Festival was a major national success and there has already been calls from many organisations for COPE Foundation to run the event again in 2010.  Performers and peer organisations have written and emailed messages of thanks and praise to the staff and volunteers that made the festival possible.   This is a credit to all of the performers, volunteers, staff and sponsors that were involved.

The day will cover all the technical  'essentials' and will give exciting examples of applications with different populations and age levels. The day is suitable for all levels of knowledge and ability from complete beginners to more confident users.
